A Famosa, Malacca

We were engaged by Jabatan Muzium dan Antikuiti as specialist consultant to study the restoration of A’Famosa. The fortress A’Famosa located at the foot of St.Paul’s Hill was built in 1511 and the St. Paul’s Church located at the top of the hill was built in 1590. These are the oldest historic monuments in the country and built during the Portuguese colonial occupation.

The scope of work encompassed a visual survey, identification of strengthening requirements, overall engineering inputs including structural assessment of failing arches, the identification of and remedial action. Due to the unique historical nature of the structures, much effort was expanded to check the proposed reinstatement for compatibility and heritage requirements including a proposed approach to pinning of the arches which although shown to be structurally viable was not implemented.

Our consultancy and management role assisted the client to implement a programme of rehabilitation to conserve an important tourist destination of considerable economic value with minimum disturbance to the original structure.
