The electrified double track rail extension project of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) from Ipoh to Padang Besar involved the crossing of an existing bridge over the railway track at Jalan Perusahaan, Prai. The bridge was over 40 years old when the investigation started.
JTK Consult (JTK) was engaged by MMC Gamuda to investigate the structural capacity of the existing bridge for it to be used as a loading bay during the construction of an adjacent bridge.
JTK undertook a structural audit and obtained the as-built parameters for the design review. A structural back analysis was undertaken to determine structural capacity to support the temporary loads. The analysis indicated that the beams did not have the capacity required. Therefore as a solution, temporary strengthening was provided using props and steel plates.
