Tunku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque, Putrajaya

JTK Consult (JTK) was engaged by Ahmad Zaki Sdn Bhd to investigate the main prayer hall floor slab, propose remedial intervention and  supervise strengthening works at  Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque in Putrajaya.

The Mosque was handed over to the client Perbadanan Putrajaya In August 2009,. Of particular concern was the main Prayer Hall post-tensioned floor slab at level 34.5 which was designed for a superimposed dead load of 2.0 kN/m2 based on an actual screed thickness of 75mm but instead was constructed with a topping of 130mm screed resulting in additional superimposed dead load.

The structural system at the basement level below the Prayer Hall consists of RC columns measuring 500mm by 500mm spaced at regular intervals (12m Grid); and a flat slab with a 250mm, 4 x 4 m drop panel supporting the upper Flat slab level. The flat slab level structure comprised a 250mm thick PT flat slab with a 75mm screed and tile finish. The design loads included the self weight of the structural elements, the 75mm thick screed and the superimposed load of 5 kN/m2 (Public Area).

An FEM analysis of the flat slab was carried out to assess the adequacy of the existing post-tensioned floor slab with the additional screed load against the original design and to propose a suitable rectification method. This was presented and agreed with Putrajaya Holdings.

The scope of works included the design of the remedial solution and supervision of the strengthening works using steel collars, including testing and quality control. The tests included Material Compliance Testing, Pullout Testing, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Testing, Mock-up Testing, Hammer Tap Testing.

The work was undertaken to a very tight schedule so that the mosque would be opened in time for a special mass prayer. This was done to the satisfaction of the client and Putrajaya Holdings.
