OA Bamboo House, Subang Jaya (Prototype)

EPIC Homes has been building affordable for underprivileged communities with a focus on the “Orang Asli” community (i.e.), the indigenous peoples of Malaysia. The current “Asli House” design uses modern building materials such as steel frames and timber for the walls and flooring and a 4 module unit can be built as quickly as 3 days. The house is also anchored to the ground using a Mega Anchor system. EPIC Homes is currently looking into using bamboo to construct these houses as a more sustainable building practice moving forward and have engaged SEAD Build to supply the bamboo for construction. JTK was engaged to verify the stability of the bamboo frame and also the connection details of the bamboo and the anchor system based on architectural design by Ewe Jin Low. JTK has undertaken a full structural analysis and design review of the Asli Bamboo House. The design capacity was computed based on limited structural properties from a previous project. A demonstration house has been built and this is being monitored for further optimisation before a final roll out of the houses for the Orang Asli Villages.
