Pantai Hospital, Kuala Lumpur

The Pantai Hospital extension project was originally designed wholly as a conventional beam–slab cast in-situ construction.

AL-AMBIA was the main contractor and JTK Consult (JTK) was engaged to assess the problem of cracking beams in the Pantai Hospital building extension project during construction.

There was a design change where the RC slabs were converted to precast hollow core construction. The approach taken was to cast the RC beam and RC topping with the hollow core slabs in place. The final topping concrete was then cast to provide the assembly full continuity.

An FEM analysis was undertaken to understand the structural behaviour and further testing was carried out to confirm the cause of the defects and options for remedial intervention were proposed.
