We were engaged by Astel-Peiniger (M) Sdn Bhd to assess the condition of a damaged pre-stressed beam on the approach section of Malacca Port in Tanjung Kling. The damage was caused by a barge impact that struck the structure. The implication of the damage caused to the beam was to be investigated and an appropriate reinstatement method was to be developed to ensure that the load carrying capacity of the affected beams was not compromised. The scope of works included a condition assessment, review of existing drawings and recommendations on appropriate reinstatement options.
All the visible defects caused by the barge impact of the pre-stressed beam was documented and based on a crack width analysis it was concluded that the beam reinforcement had already yielded and it was no longer acting to its original design intent. Based on this, we recommended two repair options namely, replacement of the beam or strengthening by external post-tensioning with all the necessary details associated with anchoring devices and concreting works. Based on the recommendations remedial action was initiated.
