Sitra Bridge

We were engaged during the tender stage of the replacement Sitra Bridge contract in Bahrain by Gamuda to assess the specialist requirements for life cycle design. The structure was to be built primarily in concrete and the use of stainless steel reinforcement was envisaged for all structural elements above submerged level. Specific needs in terms of hot weather concreting and construction sequencing required careful examination prior to tender submission. Alternative solutions to stainless steel reinforcements were developed for consideration.

Reports were produced as part of a pre-construction tender support and covered the review of project concrete specification, durability requirements and construction sequencing. An alternative tender approach was designed where the stainless steel was replaced with carbon steel, with durability being considered as part of a life cycle approach using high performance concrete and the setting up of a maintenance and inspection regime to achieve the 120 year design life.

The overall potential for savings in capital costs was considerable in relation to life time cost requirements. Also highlighted was the need for concrete construction quality and measures against thermal cracking via high end concrete technology intervention during the implementation of the project. This was the basis for an alternate tender submission giving Gamuda an unique edge in the tender process as they were the only tenderer to provide a viable alternative approach.
